Atomic Journals by Atomic Jolt

Reflective writing is one of the most effective ways to deepen student learning, but most LMS tools were not built for it. Discussion boards are public. Assignment submissions are formal. Neither one gives students a private, low-stakes space to process what they are learning and get direct feedback from their instructor.

Atomic Journals was built for exactly that. It is an LTI-integrated journaling tool, built by Atomic Jolt, that embeds directly into Brightspace course pages. Students write responses to prompts set by the instructor, and those entries are visible only to the student and the instructor. There is no separate login and no platform outside of Brightspace to manage.

Key Capabilities

  • Instructor-created writing prompts with rich content support
  • Private journal entries (visible only to student and instructor)
  • Rich content editor for student responses (formatting, links, images)
  • Entry scoring and instructor feedback
  • Student entry download (full journal export)
  • Entry visibility indicators for students
  • Course copy support across Brightspace courses
  • Push journal activities to other courses
  • Edit and delete prompts after creation
